AlphaTheta XDJ-AN: the console that disappears while I play

AlphaTheta XDJ-AN

This is not a review, so you won’t find scores or point-by-point comparisons. It’s the point of view of someone who has been DJing for about 20 years and has played a set on the AlphaTheta XDJ-AN. That’s the 2-channel all-in-one DJ system that AlphaTheta introduced in July 2026.

My name is Matteo Scapin, aka Matthew S: I’m a DJ, producer, performer and sound designer. I recorded a DJ set on the XDJ-AN in collaboration with AlphaTheta Italia. So here I tell you what I think of this console as someone who plays on it, not as a spec sheet.

Here’s the set:

My DJing philosophy: the console should disappear

For me, music comes before technology, and that’s not a slogan. After about 20 years behind consoles and players, I judge any piece of gear with a single question. Does it leave me free to think about the music, or does it distract me? If I have to look around for a button while I’m playing, I’m taking attention away from the people in front of me.

When I play, it’s like talking to the people in front of me. I watch how they react, work out what they need at that moment and pick the next track accordingly. Then I try to keep a thread running from the start to the end of the set. Everything else, the console included, is just the means to do it.

I’m self-taught: I started out as an amateur producer and DJ with what I had. So I know the ear matters more than the equipment. I bring the same principle into the classroom, where I’ve been teaching music production with Ableton Live for 15 years. I’ve used it for over twenty.

It’s also the idea behind Music4all, the inclusive electronic music project I created: technology makes sense when it lets more people make music together.

I looked at the AlphaTheta XDJ-AN with the same yardstick. The question isn’t how many features it has, but whether it leaves me free to think about the music.

From controller to club: the step every DJ takes sooner or later

Many DJs start out with a controller at home. Then comes the day you find yourself in front of a venue’s setup, with separate players and a mixer, and the routine changes. It’s a leap everyone who plays knows, but it sometimes weighs more than expected.

The XDJ-AN was designed precisely to soften that step. AlphaTheta chose a layout inspired by club setups, in particular the CDJ-3000X and the DJM series mixers. As a DJ, what matters to me isn’t the spec sheet but muscle memory. What you learn on a setup like this is waiting for you in any club.

It’s also a compact console, at 5.2 kg, so it fits at home too. That makes it a good training ground before you step onto a real stage.

Playing from USB on the XDJ-AN: back to the essentials

In this set I played from a simple USB drive, just like in a club. You plug it in, pick your tracks and mix, with no computer in between. After about 20 years it’s the routine that feels most like mine. In fact, there’s little that can go wrong, and all my attention stays on the selection and the audience.

[Add 2-3 sentences with your real impressions of the set: how the jog wheels respond, what the display tells you, how it sounds, how you got on with the headphones.]

Streaming, cloud and apps: what I think as a DJ

The XDJ-AN doesn’t stop at USB. With StreamingDirectPlay it reaches Apple Music, Beatport Streaming and Tidal. With rekordbox CloudDirectPlay it reaches your library on Dropbox or Google Drive. It also works with iOS apps such as rekordbox for iOS and djay for iOS. I didn’t use them in my set, but I have an opinion on each.

I see streaming as a discovery tool: trying a new track quickly, without downloading it, is a real convenience. However, it needs a subscription and the service may not be available in every country. For this reason, in an important set I prefer to rely on what I already have under control.

The cloud makes sense if you want to manage playlists and Hot Cues directly from the console, without going back to the laptop. Still, Cloud Library Sync requires a compatible rekordbox plan. The iOS apps, on the other hand, are an easy way to start using just your smartphone. According to AlphaTheta research from April 2026, the XDJ-AN is the first all-in-one system to work with this kind of app.

Finally, wireless monitoring: the SonicLink transmitter is built in, and AlphaTheta states a latency of 9 ms with compatible headphones such as the HDJ-F10. For me headphones are a work tool, so what really matters is that latency and reliability hold up in real use.

The XDJ-AN at a glance: the specs that matter and the limits

For those who just want the essential numbers:

  • 2 channels, 638 × 359.2 × 89.9 mm, 5.2 kg;
  • sources: USB drive, apps on mobile devices and PC/Mac, streaming services;
  • compatible software: rekordbox, Serato DJ Lite, djay Pro, plus rekordbox for iOS and djay for iOS;
  • master outputs XLR and RCA, microphone input 6.3 mm jack, headphone output 3.5 mm mini jack;
  • 3 USB Type-C ports, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a built-in SonicLink transmitter.

There are also limits to consider honestly. It’s a 2-channel system. Streaming requires a subscription and isn’t available everywhere. Moreover, Cloud Library Sync requires a compatible rekordbox plan, while djay and Serato DJ Pro work with a subscription. All the up-to-date details are on the official AlphaTheta page, which is subject to change by the manufacturer.

The collaboration with AlphaTheta Italia, stated openly

This article and the video come from my collaboration as an endorser with AlphaTheta Italia. I say so explicitly because readers have a right to know; the point of view you find here is my own.

AlphaTheta is the company behind the CDJ players, the DJM mixers and all-in-one consoles like the XDJ-AN. The collaboration revolves around the DJ set I published on YouTube. [If you like, add how it started and what it involves: events, training, other content.]

It isn’t my first collaboration with a music and technology brand: I’ve also worked with Erica Synths, Polyend, ROLI and Gamechanger Audio.

In short: the right console is the one that disappears

The AlphaTheta XDJ-AN brings people coming from a controller closer to the world of clubs. Yet it takes nothing away from those who have been playing for years. For me the final verdict is simple. If I forget about the console while I play and think only about the music, it has done its job.
